When you shop for a digital SLR camera, you’ll find a bewildering array of options. Sales people will hand you data sheets that describe in sometimes painful detail what the camera can do. I think that’s the way they try to look so great in front of us. In this section, I explain the major areas to look for when you go for shopping for that first digital SLR camera.

Recording MediumThe recording medium is the type of memory card used by the camera, such as CF (Compact Flash) memory cards. The most common card is Type I (3.3mm thick), whereas some, such as the MicroDrive, are Type II (5mm thick). Devices equipped with Type II slots can also accept Type I cards, but not vice-versa. Other common types of memory cards used in digital SLR cameras are SD (Secure Digital) and xD Picture Cards (see “Memory Cards” sidebar earlier in this chapter).

Aspect RatioThe 3:2 aspect (width to height) ratio is the most common for digital photographs and is the same ratio that a traditional 35mm film camera uses. Other available ratios you’ll find are 4:3 and 16:9.

Color Filter SystemMost digital SLR camera image sensors use an RGB filter to record a single color on each photosensor to produce an accurate image. The exception is the Foveon X3 sensor which uses a color-separation beam-splitter prism assembly and utilizes all the light and records all colors at all locations on the sensor. This technology is currently featured in the Sigma line of digital SLR camera cameras.

Recording and Image FormatA digital SLR camera should take and store photos in both JPEG and raw formats. This means that images are written to the memory card in a way that can be understood by image-editing programs. Although JPEG is a widely accepted format in virtually every software application, raw files are proprietary to each individual manufacturer and require their software, or a licensed third-party application, to convert to an editable file.

File SizeMost cameras support saving JPEG files in various sizes up to a limit, normally given as maximum file size. This is the recommended manner for capture to ensure the best quality enlargements. Shooting smaller files is quicker, allows more images to be stored on a card, and is ideal for Web use.

Image-processing ParametersSome cameras enable you to create preset custom settings that can be quickly recalled for shooting specific situations, eliminating the need to select each individual setting from the menus every time you want to use them.

InterfaceThe interface is how the camera is connected to your computer. You’ll find either USB 2.0 or FireWire (IEEE 1394) as options. Be sure your computer has a FireWire port if you choose a camera with a FireWire interface.

White BalanceWith most digital SLR cameras, the white balance, measured in degrees Kelvin, can be set for the appropriate light source. Presets for daylight, shade, cloudy, tungsten, fluorescent, and flash are common options. All digital cameras also provide an Auto preset where the camera can more accurately determine the proper white balance based on the current light source. Finally, most cameras also let you create a custom setting for a mixed light source or specific lighting situation, such as in a studio.

Camera bodies used to take wildlife photographs need to be sealed so they are waterproof and can be used on misty mornings, on rainy days and on boats out to sea where there is going to be ocean spray. A sealed camera body will also ensure sand particles, salt particles, dust particles, dirt and grime cannot get in to the internals and damage the sensor or any moving parts. A sealed camera body can be used on the beach, in a desert and just about anywhere else you can think of safe in the knowledge it won’t be damaged. 

When photographing wildlife it is unusual for the subject to simply stay in situ and pose whilst you take the photograph. More often than not the subject will be running, flying, crawling or climbing. The best way to get a keeper shot in these situations is to use continuous mode, focus on the subject, press the shutter button and keep it pressed while tracking the subject as it moves. This method takes multiple images, which should help to ensure there are some good shots of the subject. Some cameras take more images per second than others, and it is best to have a camera that can fire off many frames per second. 

The majority of wildlife is more active during the mornings and evenings, i.e. when the ambient light levels are low. In these situations it is not always possible to use a support and the only way to get the shots is to take them handheld, which is going to need a faster shutter speed to avoid camera shake. Low light levels and fast shutter speeds means high ISO levels, which can make noise an issue. There are many cameras that can be used at very high ISOs without being affected by noise and one of these is ideal for wildlife photography. 

A wildlife photographer is likely to spend many hours in the field therefore the camera must be light enough to be carried around all day. Different photographers will have different tolerances so the only way to ensure the camera is suitable is to go and see one in a shop. 

So, the perfect wildlife photography camera will; 

i) Have a tough and durable camera body that is made out of metal. 

ii) Have a sealed camera body that is water proof and will keep the dust and dirt out. 

iii) Be able to fire off many frames per second.

iv) Be able to operate at very high ISO levels without being affected by noise. 

Fortunately, there are many cameras that have the above features and all of the major manufacturers have something in their range which will be ideal for wildlife photography. Before deciding which camera to go for it is advisable to go to a camera shop and have a look at, and play with, all the different models to decide which one is best for you.

No matter what your subject is, the digital single lens reflex (SLR) cameras deliver uncompromised, professional pictures.  Until recently, the digital SLR camera was faltering behind the much cheaper 35mm SLR cameras with slower shutter speeds, and longer waiting times between pictures.  Besides, the non-digital SLR cameras have interchangeable lenses, and thousands of filters and gadgets.  Then, digital SLRs started coming out with interchangeable lenses, but those lenses tend to be rather expensive and extremely large, long and wide.  Reasons to ditch your digital SLR camera would start with the weight of the interchangeable lenses, and their cumbersome sizes.

When looking at the cost of digital SLR cameras, and all of the interchangeable lenses, multipliers and filters, a complete package that covers the entire zoom spectrum would cost well over ,000 to ,000.  A 0 to 0 digital, point and shoot camera will do almost everything that the digital SLR can do, but not to the professional clarity.  However, they are more than good enough for showing slide presentations on your high definition, LED LCD television set, and have the pictures look real.

However, amongst all the reasons to ditch your digital SLR camera, the one that does not make sense is the financial loss that you will take in selling your present setup.  Assuming that you have some very good lenses and expensive filters, you can be looking at losing half of what you spent, and that is through a private sale.

If you try selling your digital SLR camera and gear to a used camera store or pawn shop, you will take a major loss on what you spent, if you bought your gear new.  In this case, you may want to simply keep your existing digital SLR camera and gear, and adding a new, high tech camera for additional use where you may need quicker access to your camera.

With the cost of digital SLR cameras and interchangeable lenses still so very high, reasons to ditch your digital SLR camera may seem trivial, compared to the financial loss that you would take in selling your gear quickly.  Hold onto your digital SLR camera and gear, and place it for sale on community, Provincial, State and federal websites that cater to buying, selling and bartering.  Buy a camera like the Sony Cybershot, or the good old Nikon A1 film camera.  With a connector ring, you may even be able to use your digital SLR camera lenses with it.

With so many smart phones hitting the shelves lately, mainly due to the Android platform making multitasking on a cell phone seem simple compared to a laptop, improving upon the cameras and what they can do was a logical extension of cell phone upgrades.
